Bathroom and shower tile
New tile is one of the biggest changes you can make to a bathroom. In a shower, the waterproofing behind the tile is the important part.
Grout
Epoxy grout resists stains and doesn't need sealing, but it costs more and is harder to install. Regular cement grout is easier and needs to be sealed now and then.
Big tile or small
Bigger tile means fewer grout lines and needs flat walls. Shower floors usually get smaller tile so the floor can slope to the drain.
Niches
A shower niche should be framed and waterproofed before tile goes up. Cutting one in later can break the waterproofing.
Choosing tile
Natural stone is beautiful but needs sealing and more care. Grout color changes the look a lot. Matching grout looks calm, and contrasting grout shows off the pattern. Our guide to choosing tile goes into more detail.

Is epoxy grout worth it?
On a shower floor it usually earns the extra cost. On a wall that stays fairly clean, regular grout and a sealer are normally enough.
Can new tile go over my old shower tile?
It's not a good idea in a shower. You can't check what's behind the old tile, and that's the part that keeps water out.
What tile is best for a shower floor?
Smaller tile, so it can follow the slope to the drain. A textured or matte finish is less slippery.
