How Long Shower Waterproofing Lasts and What It Covers
HydroBlok and Schluter Kerdi compared on how long they last, what each warranty covers, and what you have to do to keep it.
Tile is not the waterproofing
Tile and grout let water through. The layer behind them stops it.
When that layer fails, nothing looks wrong for a long time. Water soaks the wall board, then the studs, then the subfloor. Months later you get a soft spot in the floor or a stain on the ceiling below.
By then the fix isn't a shower. The tile comes off to reach the damage, and the wood gets repaired underneath.
The two systems we use
HydroBlok is rigid foam board with a cement coating, sold as panels and pans. It replaces cement board. Seal the joints and it's tile-ready.
Schluter Kerdi is a thin orange membrane set in thin-set over a suitable base. Sealed seams make the waterproof layer.
Installed the way the maker says, both last as long as the tile.
What the warranties say
HydroBlok. Which warranty you get depends on the product. The foam boards, drains and sealants carry a limited lifetime warranty, and the install has to be registered within 60 days. Backer CI board is different: 20 years, with no registration step. Both are original-owner only and neither transfers when you sell. Both cover HydroBlok's own products, the finishing materials over them, and the labor to put those back, capped at the original cost per square foot.
Schluter Kerdi. 10 years on the Shower System and the Kerdi membranes. It becomes lifetime only if the system is set with Schluter's own thin-set — SET, ALL-SET or FAST-SET — and registered online within 90 days of purchase. Every piece has to be Schluter. Another brand's drain puts you outside it.
What neither covers
Both warranties are about the maker's materials. Neither pays for damage to your house. If a shower leaks behind tile for a year, the subfloor, framing and ceiling below are yours.
A warranty is worth having. It will not fix the house. Which is why the install matters more than the brand.
