Brushed Brass, Matte Black or Chrome for Your Shower
How brushed brass, matte black and polished chrome shower fixtures look and hold up over time, and why one finish should carry through the room.
Why the finish matters
Put brushed brass next to white marble-look tile and the room feels warm. Swap in matte black and the same tile looks modern.
You look at your fixtures every day, so pick on purpose. If you can, look at a real sample in your own bathroom light. Finishes look different under a warm bulb than they do on a website.
Brushed brass
Warm and soft, and it works against white or marble-look porcelain. Goes well with a wood vanity.
The brushed surface hides water spots and fingerprints. Quality varies more than chrome, and cheap brass can shift color over time. Buy the whole set from one maker so the tones match.
Matte black
Outlines every piece against a light wall. The shower head becomes part of the look instead of blending in. Striking against gray concrete-look tile.
Hides fingerprints well. If your water is hard, it can show white mineral spots when it's not wiped down, and harsh cleaners dull it. Soft cloth, mild soap.
On cheaper pieces the coating chips, usually on the handheld. Spend more on what you touch daily.
Polished chrome
Bright, clean, and it lets the tile be the main thing in the room. Tough, and replacement parts are the easiest to find. It shows every water spot and wipes clean faster than the other two.
